A love of all sports begins in childhood. The exposure to different sports and the opportunities available at a grassroots level can make all the difference when it comes to nurturing the nation’s next sporting heroes.
Sadly, in the UK, the funding for grassroots sports, especially for low-income areas, isn’t as prolific as it should be. Many sports lack the funding and support they need to entice youngsters to programs and help them explore their capabilities. On top of this, financial constraints from households mean that inevitably, this type of activity is cut first from household budgets to help make ends meet.
While this issue is more prevalent than people simply not being able to afford their kids to play sports, it doesn’t mean it is a hopeless cause.
For those passionate about getting more kids involved in sports and bringing communities together through sporting activities, you can get involved in helping out in your local area in many ways.
Monetary Donations
Donations to help provide sporting kits, access to suitable practice locations, transport and coaches will always be well received. Whether you are able to afford to sponsor a custom rugby kit for your local team via your business or you can donate equipment, the choice is yours. But getting in touch with your local club can help you find out what they need and how they will use the support you can offer.
Volunteer
If you cannot financially support local teams, offering your help can be a valuable asset, too. You don’t even need to know anything about playing the sport in question. You can volunteer in different ways, from cleaning up the grounds to making food and drink, becoming part of fundraising teams, helping with finances, and much more. There is always a way you can help, even if it’s not coaching or playing, but this is an added bonus, too, if you can. Be aware you might need to be DBS checked, especially when working with children or young adults, to ascertain your suitability for the role and provide safeguarding.
Promotion
This is especially important for a children’s team. However, a lack of promotion to gain new players to make up team numbers can often be an issue in some areas. While children might want to join, they might not be aware of the existing clubs or opportunities. Helping out with promotions can help you get involved and drum up interest to recruit players and team members. This, in turn, can help to gain sponsorship and funding to help support what the club does. It doesn’t matter the type of players they have or the league they play in; each and every team requires promotion to help keep it running and ensure the people who want to join know they can.
Grassroots sports, especially rugby, have suffered from a lack of funding and support since the pandemic. Supporting your local teams and lending a hand when needed can and will most likely be welcome regardless of the sport or area you live in. There are many ways you can get involved and show your support; it is about finding out what is needed and when and seeing how you can fit into the equation.
